Have you seen the photos from Australia of a spider eating a bird? It's freaking me out! I really don't like spiders. I think that's a common phobia isn't it? Most everyone in my family hates spiders. I have two brothers, grown men with children of their own, who I've seen scream and run like little girls when they've encountered a spider. And they aren't ashamed to admit this. I think I'm more tolerant of spiders than they are. I don't like killing spiders. I think that's bad luck. I usually leave them alone if at all possible. If they're somewhere that they're invading my space I scoop them onto a piece of paper or cup or something and then toss them outside. I think that's only fair. They were just trying to do their spider job, you know.  I have one rather wicked looking one living in a corner of the bathroom right now.

If you feel you 've decorated as much as possible for Halloween, but you need just a little something to give your house that extra "oomph" that will scare the pants off your visitors, take a tip from Mortica Addams and don't forget the houseplants!

Hostess with the Mostess is a genius, I'm sure we can all agree. She has a fantastic Halloween Buffett Table featured on her site with awesome decorating and treat ideas.

I'm especially loving the little pumpkin favors filled with candy. I'm thinking about making some for my nieces and nephews - they're so clever!

Today is a grey and blustery day where I live. The winds have been howling and the trees are quivering in fear. Leaves are whirling and skittering madly - it feels like Halloween is nearing! Today, I am posting a dancing skeleton halloween decoration that came out of a 1970 children's magazine (Jack and Jill). If you click on each of the images you can download a pdf of each page. As the instructions say, print them out on cardstock, punch holes where indicated and attach all the body parts with brass brads or tabs so that the joints move and you can position your skeleton any way you like!  While you are doing this you must sing,

"Dem bones, Dem bones, Dem dry bones!
Dem skeleton bones gonna walk around! [More]

Today I'm going to share some of my favorite scary art . . . and really there's a lot of art to be afraid of in the world, I realize that, so I'm just sticking mostly with the classics.  These are paintings I like or just find disturbing in a good, thoughtful way. Not disturbing like John Wayne Gacy paintings of clowns . . . shudder. So hopefully you'll like these too. Maybe you can find prints of them to hang up in your own haunted house!

This weekend we bought a coupla pumpkins. I tried to limit myself this year because I would go crazy if left unchecked, then I feel bad when the pumkins get all soft and rotten after Halloween is over. Throwing them away sucks - it's like cleaning up on New Year's Day with a hangover . . . you know the party's over. Sigh.

But let's not get ahead of ourselves right? If you're planning to carve a pumpkin or two this Halloween you must check out Extreme Pumpkins! They have galleries of carving ideas, videos on how to do it, templates available, using power tools and pyrotechnics . . . they've got it all!

Here are a few of my favorite designs from the site (it's hard to choose a few, they're all pretty clever!)

As a kid some of my favorite Halloween decorations were these little orange jackolanterns my mom made from construction paper. I didn't know for a long time that they were homemade - yet they were just simple paper jackolanterns with faces drawn on with magic markers.

If you have similar talents for constructing Halloween decorations, here are some great links to templates that you can print out and construct.

Cannon's website has lots of cool masks and decor. [More]
