Scary Inspirations

Tonight we are carving pumpkins so I was scouting out the internet looking for some inspiration and I came across this photo on the Skull a Day website (which you should check out if you haven't already!) Isn't this the coolest? People are so creative! It's too late in our area to buy any white pumpkins, but I'm keeping this in mind for next year! It's just so perfect!!

I also found this site, My Parents Loved Halloween, where there are some really great old photos - and you can post your own. Go over there for some Halloween inspiration!!!  I've also thought, isn't it funny how the costumes were not as "sophisticated" as the ones we have today, yet they are so much more scary! Really scary! I mean check out this one - I don't even know what she's supposed to be - Little Red Riding Hood, a witch? I don't know but it's freaking terrifying!!!

So this weekend on AMC they ran the classic, 1941 The Wolf Man and one of it's sequels,  Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman (1943). I just happened to wake up at the right time to catch both of these flicks, and in the wee early hours of the morning (and I do mean wee) I had some deep thoughts and questions about these movies . . . maybe you can help me with the answers.

First one, The Wolf Man - okay it's pretty straight forward right? Larry Talbot returns home from studying abroad, goes out in the woods get bitten by Bela Lugosi who's a Gypsy/Wolf Man, which turns poor Larry into a Wolf Man himself. No one believes him except the old gypsy woman who gives him a pendant for protection . . . (remember this because I have a couple questions about it) . . . then Larry goes on a rampage and ultimately is killed by a sliver tipped cane to the skull.  Okay got it.

thewolfman

My first  question is for Malvena, they gypsy - if  that pendant you gave Larry was supposed to protect him from turning into the Wolf Man, why wasn't your son wearing one?  Also, I've noticed that in old scary movies, the majority of the characters do not believe in anything supernatural. Their religion is science and no amount of coaxing will convince them that anything outside our little 3-D world exists - well until they have to crack their Wolf Man son in the skull with a silver tipped walking cane.  Yeah buddy, should have listened but it's too late now!

Okay, I'll leave you to ponder those questions while we move onto Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man. Oh boy, you have to be a real fan to watch some of these sequels . . . This one has Bela Lugosi playing Frankenstein. sigh. Oh Bela how I love you, but you should not have been playing the Frankenstein Monster!

frankensteinmeetsthewolfman

Anyhoo - I'm just going to overlook that and move on. In this movie, grave robbers open Larry Talbot's grave and I guess the moonlight shining in the open coffin wakes him from the dead . . .? And now he's awake and he's not too happy about it. So he sets off to find Malvena again, and hey, I know! Let's find Dr. Frankenstein and see if he can help. . .

What?

What about Dr. Frankenstein's  career path makes a person think, yeah, I got a problem and THIS is the guy to turn to? What exactly about a raging out of control monster, being hounded by a pack of angry villagers with pitchforks and torches, being driven from your hometown, what about all that  made you think, well after THAT success he can't do anything but fix my problems?!

So Larry and Malvena are just off on the wrong foot as far as I can tell.

In any case Dr. Frankenstein is dead, Larry's gets no help from his daughter, so he heads off to the Frankenstein ruins and finds the Monster frozen in ice (?) he chips him out and something eventually pisses them both off and they fight and it all ends badly for the monsters.  Like I said, you really have to be dedicated to these monsters to put up with this weak storyline.

Oh, I'll still watch them and I try to have my 'suspension of disbelief' but there are still times when the little things just gnaw at me. . . .   (hee hee monsters gnaw at me, get it?)

Yeah. I'm stopping now.

Halloween Quiz

Over at Orange and Black, she posted a set of questions, and didn't exactly TAG anyone, but encouraged everyone to answer, so here's mine.  (By the way, you should check out her blog - it's full of lots of fun Halloween stuff!)

Questions:

1. If you could get away with one illegal act in your life, what would it be and why?
Well, I think it would be to hack into the student loan database and delete everyone's student loans. There's no need to go into detail, but I think for the most part student loans suck and people shouldn't have to pay so much for an education. Just my opinion - but I think our society would be a lot better off if we focused more about education and less on other stuff.

2. What is your all-time favorite Halloween costume that you've worn?
A gypsy costume that my grandma helped me put together when I was 7 or 8. She had lots of cool costume jewlery, and I remember a shawl, and a great skirt - and she did my makeup and I looked FABULOUS!!! I wish I had a photo . . . :(

3. What are five movies from your childhood/teen years that define you?

I only get FIVE!!!! wow this is tough!

  • The Wizard of Oz
  • The Planet of the Apes
  • Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
  • The Ten Commandments
  • Mole People

My alternate movie is Billy Jack :)

Billy-Jack

4. What character in a movie/book/TV show/etc. do you identify with the most and why?

Probably Dorothy fromt the Wizard of Oz.  She's just trying to get home, she befriends a lot of characters on her way, and there's some mean ol' witch after her. Yeah I can relate to that. When I asked my daughter what character I was most like, without missing a beat she said, "Ursula, from The Little Mermaid." so there's that . . .

5. What is your favorite Halloween-related activity to do in October?

Oh man, I don't know if I can pick just one - it's the whole package! Decorating, dressing up, watching old scary movies!

6. What's your favorite Halloween-themed movie to watch around Halloween?
The Nightmare Before Christmas is a tradition, plus the Universal Monster Movies

7. Who is your favorite horror movie villain/monster?
Dracula - and Bela Lugosi is my vampire of choice.

dracula2

8. What is one "luxury" product you can't live without?
My computer - and hot running water :)

Feel free to answer these for yourself!

This weekend I've got a double feature movie review for your Halloween viewing pleasure. They are of course B movies - what else - and this week's theme is Vampires! And is it just me, but is the market getting saturated with vampires?  Yeah, well these are not the new breed of Vampires by a long shot!

First up we have a little movie called "Queen of Blood"

queenofbloddSee how cool this movie poster is . . . yeah that's the first thing that caught my eye too. But, still I was skeptical. Then I saw that Basil Rathbone was in it, so that sort of clinched the deal for me, I decided to take a chance and see what this movie had to offer.

The title sequence is interesting - there is a series of paintings by someone named John Cline - and they made me think of some "Night Gallery" episode, so I settled in and vowed to watch the whole thing through. On the positive side, this movie reminded me of a lot of good things - Night Gallery,  the original Star Trek  series, and old horror comic books - all things I love.

This was an ultra low budget production. The elaborate special effects were taken (uncredited) from two big budget Soviet productions, _Mechte Navstrechu (1963)_, and _Nebo Zovyot (1960)_.

Here is a quick synopsis of the movie from IMBd,

The year is 1990. An alien species makes contact with Earth through radio transmission, notifying of an imminent visit. Alien ship crash lands on Mars, and a rescue team is sent out from Earth. (The plot thickens! :) Eventually a surviving female is located and brought on to the human ship. The female is light green with an amazing hair-do. After some unsuccessful attempts by the human crew to feed her, she is more or less left to herself. (Ominous, is it not?) While most of the crew sleeps, the Alien female hypnotizes the astronaut on guard. When the crew awakens, she is sleeping, and the guard is DEAD! Brief examination shows that the Alien ate his blood. THE QUEEN OF BLOOD! Naturally, there is a lot of blood plasma on the ship, so they feed the alien using that supply. When they are almost home, however, yet another crew member is eaten, a fight breaks out, and the alien is accidentally killed before she can finish the third guy. Phew! The ship lands on Earth, finally! But there is trouble... The two remaining astronauts find a lot of eggs when they are about to leave the ship. Obviously the alien was a kind of bee-queen whose sole purpose was to spread their species to Earth, where there is a lot of yummy food... One of the astronauts tries to warn the arriving scientists of this danger, but they could not care less. Being scientists, they know what they are doing, so they collect the eggs and run happily along. The astronaut sums it up: "Well, at least I TRIED..."

The downer of this movie is that they had some great actors working here Basil Rathbone, Dennis Hopper and John Saxon - but they were completely under utilized.  The dialog is fairly lame, the sets look like someone set up some okay props in my basement. I kept thinking, "WOW those are some SPACIOUS space ships! "  and "WOW! Who knew it took so few gadgets to fly a ship to Mars?"  I'm surprised they didn't just throw a steering wheel on a silver painted cardboard box and call it good.queen-of-blood

On the other hand, the costumes were pretty retro cool, and the alien vampire queen that they rescue from Mars is really striking and spooky. The special effect that they did with her eyes was cool looking too.  So there's a lot of comic book charm that makes up for the other lame-o elements of the movie.

I recommend giving it whirl! Queen of Blood gets 2 out of 5 B-moviestar kisses.  2kisses

The second movie in our double feature is THE VAMPIRE!

thevampire

Just before Dr Matthew Campbell [Wood Romoff] dies, he passes on the product of his long years of animal research to Dr Paul Beecher [John Beal] . "It's the pills," he whispers. When Beecher gets a migraine, his daughter Betsy [Lydia Reed] mistakenly gives him one of the pills. That night, Beecher sleeps soundly but Marion Wilkins [Ann Staunton] is bitten by a vampire. When she is examined the next morning by Beecher, she gets hysterical and has a heart attack.

Dr Will Beaumont [Dabs Greer] comes from the university to investigate Campbell's work. He knows only that it involved base instincts and some sort of addicting pills that change the brain chemistry after only one dose. The pills must then be taken every 24 hours or the 'animal' goes crazy. More people begin to die. They all have two puncture wounds on their throats and appear to have died from 'capillary destruction'. Sheriff Buck Donally [Kenneth Tobey] gets suspicious and exhumes the bodies only to find them in a severe state of 'cellular destruction'. Some virus, apparently introduced by the neck wounds, is eating their tissue.  [Original synopsis by bj_kuehl]

I was more hopeful for this movie than I was for Queen of Blood. The cast is solid and the budget was obviously higher, the only thing missing was a VAMPIRE. I guess the creature that Dr. Beecher turns into is supposed to be a vampire but it's actually more like Jekyll and Hyde - and some parts even reminded me of the wolf-man stories. Dr. Beecher is agonized over his transformations enough to give Lon Chaney Jr. a run for his money, that's for sure.  I did enjoy watching this movie overall, it's a tale of something terrible lurking in a peaceful beaver cleaver town.  It's worth checking out! B-moviestar gives this movie 3 of 5 kisses.3kisses

I put together a little Halloween Activity/Coloring Book for my nieces this year, and I thought I would share it with you. It's always nice to have something for the smaller children to do at Halloween parties, in case there are games being played that are too complex for them - or sometimes they just loose interest more quickly than the older children.  You could also use this activity book at school parties - do they still do that?   I remember when I was a kid . . . waaaaaay back . . .  we always had these puzzles to do during the party. It was a way to sneak learning in I think, while trying to trick you into thinking you were having a good time! Man, those teachers were crafty!!

So here's a little pdf book for you to download. It's got 20 pages of coloring pictures and some Halloween themed puzzles, find a word, mazes, hidden pictures type activities. Click on the image to download your booklet.

Over at Designs in Digital, they host challenges that anyone can participate in - there's color challenges, word art challenges, template challenges - all kinds - and they are so much fun, I encourage you to go check it out.  This month they are having a "Hybrid Challenge" - which combines using digital art to create something in the "real" world - and this month's challenge is to create  little "Treat" or "Goody" Bags from envelopes! It's so simple and cute!

Basically you create a design and print it on a #10 business sized envelope. Then you cut the envelope in half and -viola! You have two little treat bags.  This is the design I made using the Sugar Moon Kit, Don't Look Under the Bed (which is 30% off this weekend, incidentally) and the spider and bat were created by Missy's Bits.  Then I sealed the envelope before printing it.   The entire set of instructions can be found HERE, the challenge was designed by one of the Designs in Digital Creative Team Members, "rschwetz".
