Day 14 – Old School Spine Chillers

Tired of watching the same old horror movies every Halloween? How about listening to some very spooky tales! These old time radio programs will take you back to another time, and will scare you old skool!

Click on the program title to choose from a menu of episodes.

Inner Sanctum was a radio program of mystery, terror and suspense. Memorable episodes included “Terror by Night” (September 18, 1945) and an adaptation of “The Tell-Tale Heart” (August 3, 1941). The latter starred Boris Karloff, who was heard regularly in the first season, starring in more than 15 episodes and returning sporadically thereafter. Other established stars in the early years included Peter Lorre, Mary Astor, Helen Hayes, Claude Rains, Paul Lukas, Frank Sinatra and Orson Welles.

The Haunting Hour (which is actually a haunted half-hour, but why get technical?)

“The shows are classic chills from the old school, with creepy organ, overwrought women and over the top men.”  Sweet.

Strange Doctor Weird

“Perhaps you’ll drop in on me again soon. I’m always home. Just look for the house on the other side of the cemetery… the house of Dr Weird!”

Maybe you’d like to “sink your teeth” into something a little meatier? You’re in luck! There’s the classic tale of a man and his monster!

And here’s something wonderfully different – William S. Burroughs reading “Annabel Lee” and “The Masque of the Red Death”
